What are conflict diamonds?
Conflict diamonds (also known as blood diamonds, converted diamonds, hot diamonds, or war diamonds) have a long and dark history in many regions of Africa. While sales from legitimate diamonds help African countries to prosper and develop, conflict diamonds accomplish the complete opposite. As the name infers, blood diamonds are accountable for the gruesome death of millions of Africans and play a key role in the rise and extension of many civil wars.
Countries such as Angola, Sierra Leon, Liberia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have been paralyzed by the vicious cycle of bloodshed that conflict diamonds promote. Rebel groups use the funds gained from blood diamonds in order to purchase arms and fund other illegal activities that perpetuate the violence further. The problem of conflict diamonds is a continuous; however, the UN’s passing of the Kimberly Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) in 2003 has taken a no-tolerance stance on the issue while bringing about greater public awareness. The Kimberly Process joins industry, governments, and civil society in a united effort to ban the trade of blood diamonds and ensure that consumers are not financing war and the violation of human rights.
Avoiding Conflict Diamonds & Diamond Certification
When buying a diamond make sure to work with a trusted jeweler who provides you with authentic certification. A diamond certificate provides important information about your unique diamond such as the 4 Cs, proof of your diamond's identity and value.
